With the retirement of upcoming retirements of Captain Dennis McGahan and Battalion Chief Rick Palmer, the Portage Fire Department looses over 60 years of combined fire service experience. As much as we hate to see these pillars of leadership leave the front lines, their departure opens the door for new hires and new promotions. Welcome aboard to Fireman Brad Welniack with more to follow shortly.
On September 24th, 2014, Brother Dennis McGahan is working his last shift. Everyone is encouraged to come and participate with a reception at Station 1 where there will be coffee, cake and a brief ceremony to celebrate the career of Captain McGahan. The reception runs from 2pm until 4pm.
The Portage Dept of Public Safety, Fire Division was awarded a FEMA fire act grant along with other departments in Kalamazoo County to purchase new SCBA air packs. This process has been over a year in the making however this month, the new packs have arrived! The new SCBA, manufacturered by Scott are the newest packs on the market, meeting all 2014 standards. With all fire departments in Kalamazoo County now being on the same brand (Scott), it will allow for better inner-operability with agencies and eliminate possible confusion of equipment use when working together.
All fire engines are being equiped with the new packs as firemen are trained on their new features. The new packs are anticipated to be in service by October 6th, 2014.
