      Welcome A-a-ron Chase

With the retirement of Captain Donnie Johnson, an opening was created.  The Portage Fire Division went through the process of hiring a new fireman.  The department went strictly from internal candidates (current On-Call firefighters), narrowing it down to a list of 7.  From that list, Aaron Chase was selected.  WELCOME to the JUNGLE, Aaron.

I solemnly swear to support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of this state, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office of Firefighter for the City of Portage to the best of my abilities, so help me God! - Official Swearing In Statement

Your Portage Firefighters are rolling out a new initiative aimed at educating the public about the importance of early CPR.  The initiative, sponsored by the American Heart Association, is called “CPR Anytime for Family and Friends”.  The approach uses the new “Hands Only CPR” technique also sponsored by the American Heart Association.  Studies have shown that most bystanders do not take action when faced with a cardiac emergency due to fear of doing something wrong and due to the thought that they will have to perform ventilations on a stranger.

This new campaign looks to ease the fear and to simplify the process while increasing the survival rate of the victim.  Go to the link below for a wide array of information about “Hands Only CPR”.

The Portage Fire Department has been designated as a "Child Passenger Safety Seat Inspection Station" by the SafeKids Coalition.  Portage joins Ostemo Fire, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Bronson Pediatrics as the only certified inspection station in Kalamazoo County.  Each location has the inspection event once a month making it easy for a parent/guardian to have their car seat checked and/or installed.

Anyone who is looking to have a seat installed or checked should be referred to the contact point for that location.  Currently, Captain Steve Tanner, Captain Clay Hollister and Firefighter Kevin Hawkey are the certified car seat technicians for the fire department.  Together with members of the Portage Police Department, they will work to make sure the inspection station is staffed.  The Portage Fire Department is designated with the 2nd week of each month.
